Movie people have opinions. It's practically the defining trait — nobody who loves film has ever answered "what's your favorite genre?" with a shrug. So we built a place for those opinions to live: Polls, now open in the right sidebar on MovieNight, for members and visitors alike.

What polls are

Polls are quick, one-tap questions about movies and how you watch them. Each poll shows a question and a set of answers — tap the one that speaks to you and you're done. The moment you vote, the buttons flip into a live results view: animated bars showing the percentage of the community that agrees with you (or, more entertainingly, doesn't), with your own pick highlighted so you can see exactly where you land against everyone else.

Haven't voted yet but curious how a poll is trending? There's a View results link under every question that lets you peek at the current standings without casting a vote — and a "Back to voting" link to return when you're ready to make it official.

Where to find them

On desktop, polls now live in the right sidebar — and they're the first thing you'll see there, whether you're signed in or just browsing. The panel row along the top of the sidebar still gives you one-tap access to Versus and Trivia (and Friends, for members), so nothing has moved; polls simply joined the family and took the front seat.

On mobile, open the flyout menu and you'll find a Polls button right alongside Versus and Trivia. Same questions, same live results, thumb-friendly.

The first two questions

We're kicking things off with two questions we've been arguing about ourselves for years.

What is your favorite movie genre? All eighteen genres are on the ballot — Action, Adventure, Animation, Comedy, Crime, Documentary, Drama, Family, Fantasy, History, Horror, Music, Mystery, Romance, Science Fiction, Thriller, War, and Western. Yes, Western. We believe in you, Western voters. This is the big-tent question, and we genuinely don't know how it's going to shake out: conventional wisdom says Drama and Action dominate, but movie-tracking sites tend to attract people whose tastes run deeper than the multiplex marquee. Prove the conventional wisdom wrong — or right. Either way, vote.

What movie experience do you prefer? This is the eternal debate, distilled to two options: the movie theater — theater popcorn, an Icee, the snacks, the big screen, the dark room full of strangers gasping at the same moment — or at home, relaxed on your favorite couch or chair, with whatever drinks and snacks happen to be in the kitchen, pause button within reach. We're not saying friendships have ended over this question, but we're not saying they haven't. Cast your vote and settle it.

How voting works

We kept the rules simple on purpose:

• No account required. Guests can vote on every poll. If you've been lurking on MovieNight without signing up, this is your moment — your opinion counts here even before your watchlist does.

• One vote per person, per poll. Each visitor gets a single vote on each question, so the results reflect real community sentiment rather than whoever clicked the most. Once you've voted, your answer is locked in and the results view takes over.

• Results are live. The percentages you see are computed from every vote cast, updating as the community weighs in. Early votes can swing a poll dramatically; watching a close question stabilize over days is half the entertainment.

Why we built it

MovieNight has always been about turning movie-watching from a solo activity into a shared one — Versus lets you rank your own seen list head-to-head, Trivia tests what you actually remember from all those viewings, and lists and reviews let you share your taste with friends. Polls extend that same idea outward to the entire community at once. Every vote is a tiny data point in a much bigger picture: what this community loves, how it watches, and where it disagrees.

There's also a selfish reason: we want to know these answers. When we build features, write blog posts, and curate browse lanes, knowing that (hypothetically) a third of you are Horror devotees or that home viewing beats the theater two-to-one genuinely changes what we prioritize. Polls are the shortest possible feedback loop between what you think and what we build.

What's coming next

The questions will rotate. When a poll has run its course, we'll retire it and post a fresh one — expect a mix of big perennial debates (sequels versus originals, subtitles versus dubs, theatrical cut versus director's cut), timely questions tied to what's in theaters, and the occasional deliberately unfair choice designed to start arguments. Polls can also carry images, so future questions might ask you to pick between posters, scenes, or matchups at a glance.
