MovieNight started as a place to track what you've seen, rank your favorites, and figure out what to watch next. But somewhere along the way we noticed something: the best movie nights don't start with a queue — they start with a game. An argument over which sequel is better. A trivia question nobody can quite land. A "you pick, no you pick" standoff that lasts longer than the opening credits. So today we're shipping five new features built around exactly that energy — and every one of them works without an account. Just show up and play.
Guess the Movie — a daily puzzle for film buffs
Every day at midnight, Guess the Movie serves up one mystery film — the same one for everybody, everywhere. You get six clues, revealed one at a time, and six guesses to crack it. The clues start broad (genre and era) and sharpen as you go: runtime and rating, box office numbers, a tagline with the title censored out, the top-billed cast, and finally a blurred poster for anyone still stumped on clue six.
Wrong guesses aren't wasted guesses. Each one gives you directional feedback — whether the mystery movie is older or newer than what you guessed, whether it made more or less at the box office, and whether the two films share a genre. Guess a 1994 crime drama when the answer is a 2008 superhero movie and you'll feel the puzzle narrowing around you.
Solve it and you'll build a streak, get a shareable emoji grid to flex in the group chat, and see live community stats: how many people played today and what percentage cracked it. If you've ever wanted a Wordle that respects your Letterboxd account, this is it.
Face-Off — settle it with votes
Two posters. One tap. Face-Off throws two heavyweight movies at you and asks the only question that matters: which one? Vote and you're instantly served the next matchup — it's dangerously easy to lose twenty minutes here.
But the votes aren't just for fun. Every matchup feeds a live community leaderboard ranked by a proper statistical method (Wilson score, for the nerds — it rewards movies that win consistently, not just movies that got lucky in a handful of matchups). The leaderboard updates as the community votes, so the rankings are a genuine, ever-shifting snapshot of what MovieNight visitors actually prefer when forced to choose. No stars, no reviews, no hedging — just head-to-head verdicts, thousands of them.
What Should I Watch Tonight? — decision paralysis, solved
You know the ritual. Forty-five minutes of scrolling, three trailers, one "eh, maybe," and then everyone just rewatches The Office. Tonight is our answer: a four-question picker that takes about fifteen seconds and ends with one confident recommendation.
Tell it your mood (laughs, thrills, tears, mind-benders — nine to choose from), your era, how long a movie you can realistically stay awake for, and which streaming services you actually pay for. It cross-references all of that against our database and hands you a single pick — plus a data-backed blurb explaining why it's the pick, and three alternates if the first one doesn't land. Not feeling it? One tap reshuffles. The goal isn't to show you everything; it's to get the remote out of your hand and the movie on the screen.
Double Feature — build the perfect back-to-back
A great double feature is its own art form. The two movies need connective tissue — a shared obsession, an actor bridging both casts, a director rhyming with themselves. Double Feature finds that tissue automatically. Search for any movie and it scores potential companions across three dimensions: shared themes and keywords, overlapping top-billed cast, and same-director pairings.
Every suggestion shows its work — little chips telling you exactly why the pairing works ("both feature heists," "Toni Collette appears in both," "same director") plus the combined runtime, so you know whether your double bill is a breezy evening or a full-on endurance event. Birthday Movies — what premiered the day you were born?
Enter any date into Birthday Movies and get an instant time capsule: the movies that premiered on your exact birthday, the box office hits that ruled your birth week, and the top ten films of your birth year. It's the fastest party trick on the site — and every result page has its own shareable link, so you can send a friend straight to their year without making them type anything.
Fair warning: discovering which movie was number one the year you were born is either delightful or humbling, and there's no way to know which until you look.
Why guest-first?
Everything above works the moment you land on the page — no signup wall, no email gate. That's deliberate. The best parts of movie culture are communal: the daily puzzle everyone's comparing notes on, the rankings everyone has a stake in, the recommendation you didn't have to work for. Locking that behind a registration form would kill the fun before it starts.
That said, an account still makes everything better. Members get their Seen list, personal rankings through Versus, XP and badges through Movification, trivia, lists, reviews, and friend groups — and your Face-Off votes and puzzle streaks live alongside all of it. Think of these five features as the party in the front yard; the house is open whenever you want to come in.
