If you'll indulge me, I am going to offer my very own interpretation of the larger themes that Zach Creggers is going for in **WEAPONS** that left me dumbstruck. I still can't stop thinking about it. First, we know from the trailer the inciting incident rests on the inexplicable disappearance of 17 school children, curiously all from the same classroom -- at the near-witching hour of 2:17 AM, as the chilling CCTV footage that will surely drive up purchases of Ring doorbell cameras -- that remains unsolved when our film begins. Creggers' film shows us the 'how' but not necessarily the 'why' -- which is what I want to discuss here. Spoilers aplenty from here on out, obviously: Why it is called **WEAPONS** eventually becomes clear enough before the credits roll, but I couldn't help think that what the film was really trying to show us was an awesome and terrifying demonstration of power. Raw, uninhibited, pure power. All-consuming, all-encompassing power that someone can have other others. And it is absolutely chilling. Now I am not certain what specific interpretation Creggers is going for -- and I'd quite like for him to adopt the David Lynch penchant for refusing to explicate the means of his films, even if I still think his **BARBARIANS** (2022) is trying to say something (albeit, obliquely) about gentrification. So, for what it's worth, I think **WEAPONS** is a warning about the mental sublimation of radical ideologies in a so-called civil society and how the ability to formulate rational arguments tethered to facts -- is easily discarded in favor of groupthink. More on the nose, I think this is demonstrated clearly when one of the young children discovers that his parents have lost their parental nurturing instincts, and have subjugated themselves to the radical and dangerous influences of a charismatic member of the extended family. Anyone who has had relationships with their parents damaged over politics, the 24-hour news cycle, talk radio and right or left wing influences may be able to relate to this. I know I certainly do. Worse, is the feeling that individual thoughts, reason, values have all been cast aside for the ideological and immoral agenda of a charismatic leader who intoxicates themselves by the power they wield, especially over others. Am I making this clearer? But the funny thing about power is the inevitability of the pendulum's swing -- which should leave no doubt when one is reminded of what befell Romania's Ceaușescu, Libya's Gadaffi, Italy's Mussolini, Iraq's Hussein, and, obviously, Rome's Julius Caesar. And that might be the moral of **WEAPONS** -- that as intoxicating as power can be, there is a breaking point for all leaders who wield it where, ironically, the very legions of lemmings one controls may one day 'wake up' from their fugue states, bringing with them an irreversible whirlwind of destruction. Needless to say, Creggers’ **WEAPONS** is a terrifying roller coaster ride that jolts and surprises with its rise and fall incidents as specific characters and events are explored. It's horrifying, harrowing, and sometimes funny (though the laughter I joined in on with the rest of the cinema crowd was that of the 'nervous' kind). I never felt comfortable during **WEAPONS** because of the thoroughly unpredictable direction the film was going and when Josh Brolin's character erupted with a "What the fuck!?" -- we all agreed! **WEAPONS** is bound to be many things for many people and I look forward to hearing other interpretations, but for now, this is undeniably Creggers’ best work. Garner, Brolin and Benedict Wong are standouts in this unforgettable film.

"Weapons" is undoubtedly a crazy film in lots of ways and it is actually very reminiscent of director Brian Taylor's black comedy horror "Mom and Dad" (2017) at least in relation to ordinary and reasonable people suddenly transforming into inexplicably homicidal and violent killers. The intense action scenes are extremely brutal yet also magnificently well staged and that innovative opening scene with the children running outside into the night (which, by the way, is perfectly complimented by George Harrison's aptly titled song "Beware of Darkness" ) is beautifully filmed as indeed is this entire film, but the scene does have the potential of becoming problematic at best principally because it is so immediately intriguing and now the challenge is clear: can the remainder of the film possibly be equally as good? Well, what the remainder of the film amounts to is sketchy and vague to such an extent it leaves the viewer in a state of puzzlement with more questions than answers and really only guess work and speculation to determine just what it all means and in this way it makes you think about what you have just watched and that in itself is no small achievement these days.

I don't get the praise, it's a bunch of jump scares with a bunch of plot holes, and a broken up story so you don't ask things like "Why didn't the police check the homes of the missing kids?" Now, there was one decent scene with the female protagonist sleeping in a car, no spoilers, but the rest were just jump scares, nothing more.... seriously nothing more. It's really a movie you need to think about here, in fact it's better if you don't, a tiny bit of thought will make the holes glaring. Otherwise, yeah, just a bunch of jump scares and cops acting irrationally out of the blue, and people running with their arms out. That's about it.... and for some reason people love it.

Felt this one was a bit over-hyped. It's not bad as such but at some point you'll realize that behind the big mystery and the non-linear storytelling there is a pretty shallow story with not much stuff to scare you.

I really loved this movie. It was full of surprises and yeah it was scary! Loved the acting so much, talented people put a lot of work into this and it paid off. I'm not super into horror but I highly recommend, even if you are a bit of a scaredy cat like myself!

"Weapons" combines aspects of mystery, horror and dark comedy. This film starts off with a decidedly M. Night Shyamalan mystery vibe, which gradually gives way to disturbingly psychological, as well as visceral horor. In its closing scenes, there are even elements, of dark comedy. All of this said its the reveal that defines this film. I had worked out what was going on before this point arrived. Anyone with a degree of knowledge of the occult, will understand what the car scene, with the sleeping teacher represents. Nonetheless having my suspicions confirmed, was still uncomfortably disturbing. Acting in this film is generally more than competent and the script is creepily creative. In summary, a compelling mystery, horror, with a dash of dark comedy. A must watch for horror fans.
