Starting today, you can install MovieNight on your phone, tablet, or computer — straight from your browser, in about five seconds, without visiting an app store. Look for the new install banner under the header, or the Install App link in the footer of every page. Tap it, confirm, and MovieNight gets its own icon on your home screen and opens in its own full-screen window, just like any app you'd download from the App Store or Google Play. Here's what that actually means, what it looks like on your device, and — since a few of you have asked — why we're doing it this way instead of shipping a "real" native app right now.

What did we actually build?

MovieNight is now an installable web app — the technical term is a Progressive Web App, or PWA. If that sounds like jargon, the practical version is simple: the same MovieNight you already use in your browser can now live on your device like an installed app. It gets a proper icon with our logo, its own entry in your app switcher, and when you open it, all the browser chrome disappears — no address bar, no tabs, no toolbars. Just the app, edge to edge.

Nothing about your account changes. It's the same site, the same login, the same lists, rankings, daily puzzle streaks, and Face-Off votes you already have. Installing doesn't copy your data anywhere or create a second account — it's a different door into the same house. You can install on your phone, keep using the regular site on your laptop, and everything stays in sync because it's all just MovieNight.

What it looks like on your device

On Android (Chrome, Edge, Samsung Internet, and most other browsers): tap the Install button in the banner or the footer link, and your browser pops up a native install prompt with our icon and name. Confirm it, and MovieNight appears on your home screen and in your app drawer alongside everything else. From then on it launches full-screen in its own window — if you didn't know better, you'd assume it came from the Play Store.

On iPhone and iPad: Apple handles installs a little differently — Safari doesn't show an automatic install prompt the way Android browsers do, so the process is manual but still quick. Tap Install App and we'll show you the two steps: hit the Share button in Safari (the square with the arrow pointing up), then choose Add to Home Screen. That's it. MovieNight lands on your home screen with its own icon and opens full-screen like any other iOS app. This is also why iPhone users see the install banner and footer link all the time rather than only when the browser decides to offer it — Safari never offers, so we do.

On desktop (Chrome and Edge on Windows, Mac, or Linux): you'll see the same Install option, and you can also use the small install icon that appears at the right end of the address bar. Installed on desktop, MovieNight runs in its own window with its own taskbar or dock icon — handy if you keep it open while working through your watchlist or running a Tonight picker session before movie night actually starts.

One nice detail: once you've installed, the app is smart enough to stop asking. The install banner and footer link hide themselves automatically when you're inside the installed version.

Why install at all?

Honestly? Convenience, mostly — but convenience adds up. The installed version launches instantly from your home screen instead of making you find a tab or type a URL. Full-screen mode means more room for posters and rankings on a phone, where every pixel of vertical space counts. It keeps MovieNight one tap away on the couch, which matters for the things we've been building lately: checking off tonight's movie, keeping a Guess the Movie streak alive, or settling a Versus matchup while the credits roll. And because it's still the web underneath, you always have the newest version the moment we ship it — no update downloads, no "please update to continue" screens, ever.

Why not a native app? (The honest answer)

We know some of you would love to see MovieNight in the App Store and on Google Play, and we want to be straight with you about why we're holding off — because the answer is mostly about being a small team that would rather spend its hours making MovieNight better than maintaining three copies of it.

Cost. Shipping native apps isn't just a one-time build. Apple charges $99 every year for a developer account, Google charges a $25 registration fee, and that's the cheap part. The real cost is development: a proper iOS app and a proper Android app are two additional codebases, each with its own languages, frameworks, quirks, and testing devices. Even the "write once" cross-platform tools still demand platform-specific work for anything non-trivial. For a project our size, that's a significant, permanent tax on everything we do afterward.

Time. Every feature we've shipped this year — Movification levels and badges, polls, the five guest games, streaming pages, the works — went from idea to your screen in days because there's exactly one MovieNight to update. With native apps, each of those launches becomes three launches: web, iOS, and Android, plus app store review queues that can hold a release for days and force resubmissions over guideline details. The pace you've gotten used to would slow down noticeably, and we think pace is one of the best things about this project.

The gap is smaller than it used to be. Five years ago, native apps had huge advantages: push notifications, offline access, home screen presence. That gap has mostly closed. The installed web app already gives you the home screen icon, the full-screen experience, and the instant launch. The web version will always be first to get new features, because it is the source of new features.

None of this means never. If MovieNight grows to the point where a native app earns its keep — and there are real native-only benefits our users are missing — we'll build one, and the good news is that everything we ship today carries over. But right now, the honest trade is: a native app would cost us months of feature development to deliver an experience nearly identical to what the install button gives you today for free.
