Mortal Kombat Legends Collection
In 1980s Hollywood, action star Johnny Cage is looking to become an A-list actor. But when his costar, Jennifer, goes missing from set, Johnny finds himself thrust into a world filled with shadows, danger, and deceit. As he embarks on a bloody journey, Johnny quickly discovers the City of Angels has more than a few devils in its midst. He faces off against a sinister secret society plotting a nefarious scheme, but the brutal fight against the bloodthirsty warriors of the Netherrealm is just beginning.

"Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match" leans heavily into a nostalgic 80s Los Angeles vibe, complete with bright neon lights and a killer synthwave soundtrack. It’s a fun setup that explores Johnny Cage’s early days as a struggling actor trying to make it big. Joel McHale perfectly voices the narcissistic yet vulnerable star, bringing a natural charm that carries the movie's early moments. This fresh take on his origin story gives longtime fans something new to chew on, showing who he was before he became the savior of Earthrealm. However, the movie’s obsession with 80s parodies and satirical comedy creates a huge identity crisis. It constantly pokes fun at Hollywood clichés, but these relentless jokes quickly get tiring and strip away the dark, mystical tone that defines Mortal Kombat. Because the vibe is so goofy most of the time, the franchise's signature extreme gore feels totally out of place. Jumping straight from silly punchlines to graphic bloodbaths completely ruins the tension, making the violence feel like a random afterthought instead of something that actually adds weight to the story. The main plot—a detective mystery about a missing co-star and a secret LA cult—never really gets off the ground. The script is incredibly shallow, and the villains are so generic and non-threatening that they just serve as easy setups for Cage’s sarcastic comebacks. To make matters worse, the movie drops the ball on the martial arts. The fights are short, uninspired, and lack the heavy impact fans expect, while the animation itself often looks stiff and under-budgeted whenever the characters aren't throwing punches. While the story starts with a decent rhythm, it completely falls apart by the third act, rushing into a messy and confusing finale. Even Cage's unexpected team-up with the demon warrior Ashrah falls flat because they lack any real chemistry, essentially wasting a solid supporting cast. At the end of the day, "Cage Match" delivers a cool retro aesthetic and great voice acting, but it sacrifices a good story and epic action for cheap laughs. It’s a stylish but superficial ride that forgets what makes Mortal Kombat so great in the first place.

I thought it was pretty good to be honest. The story was admittedly slower than the previous movies but the characters were well done. Johnny Cage and Ashrah being co protagonists was definitely interesting and worked surprisingly well. Also nice to see Raiden in the movie. Sareena and Shinnok being the main villains was also really cool and I liked that they added others like Kia and Jataaka. Overall it's a fun watch for a Mortal Kombat fan.
