Video game adaptations usually struggle, and this fighting franchise sequel is a painful reminder of that fact. Fans naturally expected the movie to fix past mistakes and finally deliver the promised fighting tournament, but it rushes right past it. Instead of focusing on the arena, the story takes a sharp turn into a generic, CGI-heavy fetch quest for a magic amulet. The pacing is ridiculously fast, jumping from one chaotic scene to the next without giving the story any room to breathe. Ultimately, the movie tries to hide its incredibly empty plot behind a wall of extreme physical action and fake-looking digital worlds. The script doesn't help the situation at all, forcing the cast to deliver cringey, early-2000s style dialogue that makes serious moments feel like an awkward joke. It is honestly frustrating to see martial arts legends like Hiroyuki Sanada and Tadanobu Asano wasted as glorified extras, while the new faces lack any real chemistry or emotional depth. The only actual saving grace here is Karl Urban as Johnny Cage. He completely leans into how ridiculous the whole premise is, delivering a hilarious, self-aware performance that provides some much-needed relief from the rest of the cast's forced, wooden seriousness. Despite having a noticeably bigger budget, the movie somehow looks and sounds incredibly artificial from start to finish. The sound design is just an exhausting, deafening assault on your ears, where terrible dialogue gets completely buried under non-stop explosions and generic background music. Visually, the heavy reliance on green screens makes the fantasy worlds feel totally empty, and the lighting makes it look like a giant video game cutscene. Even the costumes and weapons look like cheap, plastic cosplay rather than battle-worn gear, robbing the movie of that gritty, realistic edge it so desperately needed to be taken seriously. Worst of all, the movie completely ruins the one thing people actually came to see: the fights. The director tries to hide the action with dizzying, quick-cut editing and ridiculous amounts of fake-looking CGI blood, which totally kills the brutal impact of the classic fatalities. Instead of letting the martial arts shine, the movie constantly pauses the action just to spoon-feed fans classic catchphrases and forced easter eggs. In the end, this sequel sacrifices a cohesive story and genuine tension just to pander to gamers with cheap nostalgia, leaving us with a hollow and soulless spectacle.

Action movie filled with martial arts, what a way to spend the better part of two hours. Even with all the blood and gore, this did it for me. Add the humor injected with many familiar faces, what could possibly go wrong. If I had to say anything negative it would be that some of the fight scenes were unbelievable, but this is supposed to be fantasy so I looked past that. If action and martial arts are your genre, you should enjoy this movie. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Check out my full review @ https://www.manuelsbento.com/mortal-kombat-ii-2026-karl-urban-tries-his-best-in-an-otherwise-underwhelming-sequel/ Rating: C Five years ago, I gave the MORTAL KOMBAT reboot a cautious pass, mostly on the strength of its action. The sequel finally delivers the tournament fans wanted, but the fix comes at a cost: an overstuffed plot, an underused villain, and visual effects that don't always match the craft on display. Karl Urban is a genuine standout as Johnny Cage, effortlessly outshining everyone around him, and Adeline Rudolph isn't far behind. Everything else, though, feels rushed and thinly built.

Entertaining enough of a fantasy-horror-actioner that I liked a bit better than the first film from 2021 and is light-years better than Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Karl Urban plays a fun Johnny Cage and the fight scenes were good as were the gory deaths. Nothing I'll probably remember years down the road but I liked this well enough. **3.0/5**

Not a flawless victory, but fun By no means is this a perfect movie, but it is a fun movie, for sure. There have been a lot of bad Mortal Kombat movies, but this is actually not just a decent homage to the games, but an actual movie, with a beginning, middle, and end, along with characters, arcs, and a storyline. The casting is good, with Karl being the standout, obviously. It is very polished, and it is a fun watch.

I am somewhat of a fan of the game and think that this level of violence isn't what the films need to show. I think if there was more violence this would have been perfection.
