Great movie - a thriller, not in any way a horror movie. There are definitely very brief moments that put us on the edge of our seats, but that's more about continually anticipating the next event, or room, or response. This movie is like walking through a maze. It's done a great job of ensuring that you'll never experience the boredom of a maze, by frequently changing outcomes. So, I classify this movie mainly as a thriller - not an action-thriller or horror-thriller. I really can't include too much detail in the review, because this movie is so incredibly simple. Disclosing much of any scene would be a spoiler for the entire movie. To oversimplify the movie to an extreme, it's like being in a house of mirrors, but instead of looking for an exit, you're being drawn towards something bizarre. You definitely have to know something, then you're rapidly running away after discovering it. (Rince repeat again and again.) The creators should get awards for doing so much with the simplest of scripts, sets and characters (all nobodies). There is really only one main character, an occasional frequent visiting character, and two that appear only for very brief few moments. It's impossible that this movie would leave you with any lasting effects or thoughts, but it does. 4/5 STARS (It might get 4.5 stars if it had an ending disclosure.)

Backrooms has an unsettling premise, and there are moments where the atmosphere works, but it never sustained that tension for me. The empty spaces and strange surroundings are creepy at first, then gradually become repetitive. Too much of the movie feels like waiting for something more interesting to happen. I don’t mind a horror movie taking its time, but the buildup needs a satisfying payoff. Here, I found the atmosphere more effective than the story, and neither was enough to keep me invested throughout. A few eerie moments, but overall a disappointing use of a promising concept.

This is another problem with Hollywood, was it Reddit or Creepy Pasta that did it first? I know the Why Files did a decent job with it. They all told scary stories and left the end open.... so Hollywood saw that it was a fan favorite story and they turned it into a movie, but the story didn't have a clear ending, and Hollywood doesn't know how to write, so in the end you get a story that goes nowhere because it was based on an unresolved creepy conspiracy theory that didn't have a clear ending. I wouldn't have minded an ending of some kind, even if it was ambiguous or a cliff hanger. That would have been nice. And then the other failing. Listen Hollywood, if you're not going to try and scare us when you're making a horror movie, at least give us tits and gore like you used to. Watching people run through an endless maze with no resolution or point is less exciting than watching a hamster do it for a treat, at least the hamster gets a resolution. If you're not going to give us scares and plots then give us tits and carnage candy and turn it into a slasher.

From its trailer, this seemed like a good movie. In watching, though, it was a little disappointing. I don't mind a movie leaving some lingering questions, but I think this one didn't reveal enough. I don't require a neat, fully-resolved Hollywood ending, but I need a little more than this movie gave. I had some theories about why things were happening in the movie, then there was a new plot element that may affect that theory. Or not. It's difficult to say, because not enough is revealed. Some movies leave lingering questions and end on cliffhangers to hint at or even ensure a sequel. However, if the movie doesn't reveal enough, there won't be enough viewer interest to warrant a sequel. Although I would like to see a sequel or a series developed from this, I suspect it won't happen because not enough viewers were satisfied. I also think this is somewhat derivative of the series "Severance" and it needs to prove that it needs to exist.

Translating an internet legend to the big screen is a huge challenge, but A24 and director Kane Parsons managed to nail the creepy aesthetic of the famous "Backrooms." By relying heavily on practical effects rather than just green screens, they made the endless yellow maze feel incredibly real, dirty, and deeply claustrophobic. The visual design is the true star here, perfectly capturing that weird liminal space vibe where everything looks familiar but feels fundamentally wrong. Parsons shows surprising maturity as a young director, using steady camera work and patience to build a genuinely oppressive atmosphere right from the opening scene. The movie’s unsettling vibe is heavily boosted by its brilliant sound design and strong lead performances. The constant, annoying hum of the old fluorescent lights slowly chips away at your sanity, and when the movie suddenly shifts to dead silence, the tension becomes almost unbearable. On the acting side, Chiwetel Ejiofor does some heavy lifting acting against basically nothing, using his body language to perfectly portray a man losing his mind in isolation. Renate Reinsve also shines as his therapist, bringing a much-needed touch of humanity and warmth that contrasts beautifully with the cold, lifeless hallways. Unfortunately, the movie stumbles hard when it comes to the script and pacing. Stretching a minimalist concept into a two-hour runtime creates a massive drag in the middle, turning what should be terrifying into something kind of boring and repetitive. The film also falls into the modern trap of trying to force a deep, intellectual metaphor about trauma, which just slows the story down. Worse yet, they decided to actually show the threat—a generic CGI monster that completely ruins the mysterious, existential dread the empty rooms had already built up so well. Because the main character isn't given much of a personality, it eventually becomes hard to stay emotionally invested in his survival. The ending only adds to the frustration, wrapping things up abruptly while clearly planting seeds for future sequels instead of giving us a satisfying, standalone conclusion. It feels a bit like a corporate cash-grab trying to turn a weird, anonymous internet mystery into a predictable movie franchise. Still, even with these glaring issues, the jump from YouTube to a Hollywood feature is an impressive technical achievement. It is definitely worth seeing on the biggest screen you can find, just to experience the incredible visuals and sound for yourself, as the sheer dread of those endless yellow rooms might hit you completely differently.
