If you crossed the Brothers Grimm's classic 1819 short story ***The Bremen Town Musicians*** with a Klingon Warrior's rite of passage, and set that within the Predator universe -- you end up with writer and director Dan Trachtenberg's **PREDATOR: BADLANDS**. One cannot argue that Trachtenberg, who is single-handedly ushering in a Predator renaissance beginning with his 2022 **PREY**, followed by this year's animated, gory actioner **PREDATOR: KILLER OF KILLERS** has [(which I reviewed here)](https://letterboxd.com/fixateandbinge/film/predator-killer-of-killers/) pulled off a brilliant Predator hat-trick for fans of the franchise. In only three years Trachtenberg has brushed away over a decade of accumulated dust on a franchise that seemed destined for the dustbin of ignominious cinema oblivion (hastened, in large part, by those incongruous Alien matchups that tried, and failed, to follow the Universal Studios formula of Dracula versus Frankenstein, Wolf Man, etc) -- and has reintroduced the franchise to a new generation of fans. In **BADLANDS**, Trachentberg plunges viewers firmly into the warrior culture of a clan of Predators (which we learn are called Yautja) steeped in 'only the strong deserve to live" ethos. Caught up in this warrior code is Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) -- who in his bid to earn his place as a bona fide Yautja for his clan, escapes to a 'Killer Planet' to subdue an unkillable creature, and avenge a heartbreaking loss in the bargain. Two birds, one stone. Outclassed and struggling to survive on the hostile planet -- Dek accepts help from one of the most unlikeliest of sources -- a severely damaged synthetic android Thia (Elle Fanning) --who has an interesting connection to the world of **ALIEN** (which I feel is unnecessary to maintain at this point). Together they navigate the perils of the treacherous world they are on, with Dek doing something we haven't seen before from a Predator: set aside his Yautja machismo in favor of working with others. In the process of doing this, a mutually beneficial friendship develops between Dek, Thia and an indigenous creature that will tug at your heartstrings, adding some comic relief to what would otherwise feel like a brutal, one-note slog. For anyone despairing over the rating -- PG-13 -- given the barbarism I watched on screen, this is every bit as gory and graphic as any of the previous **PREDATOR** films. I understand the rating -- I do, but for anyone laboring under the assumption that Trachtenberg 'nerfed' the film's violence, I'm happy to say that is not the case. As a sci-fi, actioner -- this is a good addition in the **PREDATOR** franchise, but I remain doubtful of the efficacy of keeping the door open to incorporating anything from the **ALIEN** franchise. Trachtenberg's **PREDATOR** franchise is working just fine on its own.

This is how you build That Predator and Alien are part of the same shared universe is a thing since the Dark Horse Comics books in the 90s, and there have been mentions here and there, but this is the first time we see how this integration of two intellectual properties can synergize well. The story is decidedly predator-focused, with the "human" element mostly there as a point of view, but the vision is realized well, the effects, shot-composition, sound and directing works well, and the overall impression is really good. An absolute must for any fan of the predator-franchise.

LOL...I mean, serously. What is the term the braindead woke zombie goose stepping morons use everytime they trash an IP? Subverting expectations? Something like that? Well, they did it again. Once more they subverted audiance expetations by making a predator movie that's not a predator movie, which, honestly, isn't very shocking. The last thing Hollywood wants to do at the moment is give the audiance what they want and deliver a Predator movie when they pay to see a Predator movie. But, whatever, it pushes **_THE MESSAGE_**, which makes it the exact same movie as basically every movie since 2016... and, unfortunately, they FAILED to subvert expectations there. We knew it was going to be woke trash and they gave us woke trash.

Predator: Badlands is a masterclass in subverting expectations while staying fiercely loyal to the primal roots of the franchise. Seeing the world through the Predator's perspective adds a layer of tactical depth and alien wonder that makes every hunt feel fresh and earned. The technical execution is flawless, with breathtaking visuals that satisfy the need for high-end spectacle and a story that carries genuine emotional weight. The ending is a particular standout, delivering a powerful and resonant conclusion that cements this entry as a definitive peak for the series. It is a rare gem that succeeds in being both a pulse-pounding sci-fi thriller and a deeply engaging character study, making it an absolute 10/10 triumph that resets the bar for what this franchise can achieve.

"What time is it? It's !@#$% r@ping time!" Wrong movie in the franchise, I know, but I can't help it. I like me some Walton Goggins! I really like this movie for finally giving us a different perspective. I was concerned that this movie would irritate me after Prey (2022)'s ending irritated me, but I was pleasantly surprised, and I am now looking forward to the next entry from this director. I hope he doesn't !@#$ it up somehow. **MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD:** Dek, Thia, and Bud, join Dutch, as my favorite characters in this franchise. Bud is just absolutely adorable throughout the movie. My favorite Bud scenes are: 1. Dek and Thia's first meeting with Bud. 2. Bud mimicking Dek by the fire. 3. Bud waving the severed arm. Badlands (2025) joins Predator (1987) and Predators (2010) as my favorite movies in the franchise: 1. Predator (1987), Predators (2010), Badlands (2025) 2. Killer of Killers (2025) 3. Prey (2022) -- Should have extended the final fight instead of making the Predator act so stupid. That's how I remember it anyway. 4. Alien vs. Predator (2004), The Predator (2018) 6. Predator 2 (1990) -- Last because the acting is so atrocious that it distracts from the movie. I don't think I've seen Aliens vs Predator: Requiem (2007).

I thought it was a great idea, telling the story of the Predators and their culture! In fact I was hoping for more of that from when "Predators" came out. Loved how they tied it in with the "Alien" franchise also loved that when they first did it with AVP. But there were a few niggles that killed it for me. Firstly, reading subtitles for too long that really isn't necessary especially when they had a synthetic speaking English anyway, like hello. The idea of Predator has always been the hunt is everything so I can forgive what they did here it was creative but again the story felt off like they were not sure of who the bad guy was. Nice try good ideas just seemed unpolished.
