Most people remember John Wick for the gun-fu and the body count. Watch it again and notice what actually sets all of it in motion: a beagle puppy named Daisy. Wick's wife dies of illness in the opening minutes. Before she goes, she arranges for a puppy to be delivered to his door the morning after her funeral, with a note telling him he still needs something to love so he does not lose himself to grief. That dog is not a throwaway plot device. It is her final act of care, a small warm thing standing in for the person he just buried. So when three thugs break into his home, beat him, and kill the puppy to steal his car, the film is not really about a stolen Mustang. It is about a grieving man having the one tether to his wife torn away from him. Everything that follows is the sound of that grief turning into purpose. The craft is in how little dialogue this needs. A few quiet minutes with the puppy, and you understand exactly why a retired assassin picks the gun back up. The dog gives the violence its meaning, which is rare for an action film. For dog lovers the early scenes are genuinely hard to watch, but the loss is treated with real weight rather than cheap shock. That respect is why it lands. John Wick is a simple revenge story with a lot of action scenes. Dialogue is kept short and simple. Because of this, pacing is really good. Cinematography and fight choreography are great; action scenes are filmed with minimal cuts and are satisfying to watch, although not really realistic. Music goes well with the action scenes. The world it is trying to build is interesting in its own way and probably a differentiating factor from similar movies. The acting is good, mostly carried by the other actors, while John (Keanu) does the shooting and is a character of few words.

It’s about time I watched John Wick, especially since I want to be up to date before seeing the upcoming film Ballerina (spoiler: I loved it). I absolutely love Keanu Reeves, and I know John Wick has a massive following. But I think people are going to hate me for saying this: why do people like these films so much? I appreciate the storyline that runs through the entire franchise. I like the idea that everyone is somehow connected, it adds a certain world-building element that’s quite engaging. But beyond that, I struggle to understand the hype. To me, it feels very action-heavy, and while that’s fine, I personally prefer films that are more drama-based or focus on thematic depth. Maybe that’s why I’m not fully connecting with it. Also, the sound design and music feel a bit odd to me, and there’s a noticeable lack of dialogue. The action is non-stop, but I find myself missing character development and emotional layers. I just don’t know. I can’t quite vibe with it. When a couple of young gangsters take a liking to the car of the recently widowed “John Wick” (Keanu Reeves) they little expect that he will be able to put up much resistance as they enter his home at night and pinch it - beating him up and killing his dog at the same time. What is clear to arch-villain “Viggo” (Michael Nyqvist), though, is that his hot-headed son (Alfie Allen) has gone and stirred up one hell of an hornet’s nest. To try to save his son from what would appear to be certain death, he tries to enlist the help of assassin “Marcus” (Willem Dafoe) but “Wick” is armed with an whole array of weaponry and some invaluable gold coins that suggest he is part of an international network that has rules! Woe-betides anyone who crosses them, or their enforcer “Winston” (Ian McShane). It’s end-to-end stuff, this, with loads of brutal action right from the start. Reeves does regurgitate his “Neo” role from “The Matrix” (1999) a little but here the stunt choreography is nowhere near as repetitive and the cat and mouse dynamic excites more naturally than some more video-game style of adventures where the scenarios play, reset and repeat all too often. Reeves hasn’t much by way of meaningful dialogue to worry about as the action elements unfold, he just needs to be as useful with a surgical needle as he is with guns, knives and trashed furniture. It does rather rush things at the end, with a few significant sub-plots terminated unimaginatively, but this is still a solid and entertaining revenge thriller that gets the mix of mayhem and carnage just about right.

Simply a cool character doing a lot of very bad things for all the right reasons. Immensely slick and incredibly fluid action in this movie. But the subtleties and nuances of world details are what make this story so addictive. Even after more than a hundred watches I still have to skip that puppy scene.
